surnames MENZIES & several unknown persons . . . .
- I am forwarding pictures that were taken of my grandfather, David Douglas MENZIES. He was a schoolmaster and lived in the Orkney Islands in the late 1800's, from approximately 1892-1896. He was married in 1892 at Black's Hotel, Kirkwall (now known as the Ayre Hotel) to Alison Thomson KIRK. It is interesting to note that one of the witnesses to their marriage was G. M. BLACK, who I would assume was the owner of the hotel at that time.
Neither of them were born [on South Ronaldsay], but I believe he moved there for his employment. He was originally from Strathmiglo, Fife. Two of their children, David and William, were born in South Ronaldsay [in 1893 and 1895, respectively]. Around 1899 they moved to New Reay, Caithness.
The information I have on the pictures is shown at the top of [each] picture [note from Lisa C. -- view larger images to read this information]. Since the photographer, James BROWN, was based in St. Margaret's Hope, I assume that these pictures were taken at the school for which David was the schoolmaster (the birth registers for his sons, David Jr. and William indicate their father was the schoolmaster at the schoolhouse in Widewall).
The last picture, of the four adults, was taken by the same photographer, but I have no information regarding the individuals. I assume the photos may have been taken around the same time as the school pictures, and they could possibly be other teachers or people involved with the school.
There is always the possibility that someone might be able to identify some of these people and I thought these pictures of the past may be of interest to you.
