 c.  16 Dec.181(1), Brough.  W-  Gilbert Thomson, William "Goutcher".  >per OPR -- (NOTE: This baptism entry in the OPR is found on a page that depicts other baptisms mainly for the year 1810, and I realize that other transcriptions available for this individual's baptism present it as occuring on 16 Dec.1810... but I suspect the year was probably 1811. There is a very dark blot of ink visible obscuring the identity of the final digit of the year for James' entry. It is the last entry on this page. The entry is quoted directly as "181[?] - Gutcher -- Decr. 16th Baptized James lawful son of Thomas Goutcher & Helen Gray in Brough, witness Gilbert Thomson & William Goutcher". There is also one other entry on this particular page that distinctly portrays a baptism year for 1811, and not 1810, like the others.
The fact that the baptism entry specifically states that James was the lawful son of Thomas and Helen leads me to reasonably assume that he was baptized after their marriage (in order to be "lawful").
Thomas and Helen, however, did not marry until 23 Dec.1810. My theory is that the dark blot of ink actually covers a number "-1", and that James was baptized, as a lawful son, in the year 1811.)
